One of our favourite afternoons of the year! A quick reminder of the two varieties of trees we grow and sell here:~ NORWAY SPRUCE (photo number two) The quintessential, traditional Christmas tree which became popular in Victorian times when the annual tradition of bringing something green into the household during Winter first started. It has a gorgeous pine scent, and dense triangular shape, a tree to really evoke childhood memories of trees in the home. Can drink up to a litre of water a day so likes regular watering (we sell water-holding tree stands), can drop a few needles but that’s really not a problem here as all our trees are so fresh growing in the plantations. £7 per foot. NORDMANN FIR (photo number 4) Now the UK’s most popular choice for a tree due to its needle-holding propensities. It has slightly darker foliage with more ‘spaced out’ layers of branches and rounder denser smooth foliage. Doesn’t require much watering so easy to keep. A really lovely looking tree. £9 per foot. Which is your favourite? Personally, our show-stopper tree here at home is always a Norway Spruce! We love the scent. 👉 Don’t forget to ask our advice when you visit. What a fantastic annual competition day today! Thank you so much to the organisers British Christmas Tree Growers Association @bctga and the hosts @templecourtchristmastrees near Ledbury in Herefordshire for another brilliant event. We’ve been measuring our tallest trees to start organising retail orders for offices, schools, parish councils, churches etc. We have Nordmann Firs up to 13ft and Norway Spruce up to 9ft. A wide bay window…or a double height entrance hall? These trees might work for you 😁 This week I’ve been chopping out brambles and blackthorn from the trees ~ a bit of a challenging task but it makes such a difference…and it’s a good chance to spy some real tree beauties too 🌲 Photos 3 & 4 in our newest plantation are the easiest way to show you the difference it makes to cut out blackthorn. Scale this up to the taller Firs & Spruce and this is a good job done. Today Chris was also mowing in the plantation I was chopping in. I reckon he had the better task hey! Sunflowers to make you smile 🌻 We’re happy with our little patch of sunflowers we planted in one of our tree plantations~ they’re just coming out, looking lovely and the insects are already enjoying them 🐝 We plant these to increase biodiversity ~ they provide a rich source of food for insects and birds which live in the Christmas trees. They are also a great way of adding organic matter to the soil before we plant some more trees in this area. Mowing done ✅💪 That’s what you call a good day and a half’s work! Just the 43,000 steps driving our monster DR Mower in between various sections of the trees ~ Chris may need a short nap now 💤 Mowing makes a huge difference and it’s tricky to show the scale of it in photos. It makes the trees much easier to walk around in our open season…and means the ‘shearing’ contractors can now come to shear the Norway Spruce into tip-top shape. Talking trees 🌲🌲 Last night it was really lovely to welcome Hackleton WI to the farm for a tour of the tree plantations. And the weather couldn’t have been kinder! As many of you know, we love “talking trees,” and were able to explain the different jobs we do in them in all year round to manage different growth stages. Afterwards we took the chance to enjoy a @thefruityfarmer Raspberry Vodka Liqueur and Prosecco with cheese & biscuits in the sunshine. That’s another productive weekend! The second round of leader control in the Nordmann Firs is now all done ✅ This involves spraying a product onto the new leader to slow its growth down as we are aiming for a leader length of approx 25cm for this growing season, which keeps the trees nice and dense and bushy 🌲 Yesterday we had hoped for the excitement of a Red Arrows flypast…unfortunately it was cancelled due to low cloud but we did see what we believe was a WW2 American flying boat fly right over us in Spinney Field ~ did anyone else see it? This morning’s task ~ sowing a wildbird mixture on a field next to our Spinney Field Christmas tree plantation. The mix contains triticale, sunflowers, red millet, white millet, sorghum, iris oil radish and linseed. This will grow over the next few weeks to provide a diverse food source for insects & birds, next to the Christmas trees which provide the perfect nesting habitat. Food + accommodation = the perfect bird + insect hotel 💚 It’s all about creating a diverse environment here on the farm 🌲 #TheXmasTreeFarm #Farm365 #MayOnTheFarm

We’ve recently cultivated this section of The Pyghtle (the small field with trees in behind our farm buildings) and next year we should plant about 200-300 Christmas trees on it…but for now we’re sowing some sunflower seeds. Sunshine ~ how amazing is that?!? Plenty of jobs to crack on with in the trees at this time of year when the list goes completely crazy…and it’s so nice to be working without a coat or a bobble hat and to feel warm ☀️ This week we’re removing cones from the Nordmann Firs. The trees produce cones when they’re under stress, often weather related, and it’s best to remove them otherwise the tree puts needless energy into growing them. Sunshine ~ we’ll take that! A busy weekend catching up on jobs in the trees now we’re finally able to get back on the fields with the tractor after such prolonged rainfall. ✅ Ground weeds sprayed across many of the plantations ✅ Mowing finished off on the Jutek tractor using our new mower attachment which does a brilliant job ✅ And over the past couple of weeks (before the sun made an appearance) George has cracked on with all the bud-rubbing across all the Nordmann Firs. Described in one sentence, but that was over 40+ hours of work! It involves removing the central bud from each ‘frond’ of the crown layer of the Firs, prompting good shape. The devil is all in the detail with these trees 😊 It’s great to see the Norway Spruce now ‘flushing’ with their new growth, so bright & green and definitely a sign of Spring 🌲🌲 #TheXmasTreeFarm #Farm365 #JobsOnTheFarm #AprilOnTheFarm #FarmGrownTrees #BritishChristmasTrees #NordmannFir #NorwaySpruce

After so much wet weather it was great be able to get on with some work in the trees yesterday. We’ve been trimming the lower branches of a batch of Norway Spruce planted four years ago. Basal pruning encourages better shape of the tree and makes them easier to cut down once they reach harvesting season. Happy 12th birthday to our lovely Fluffy 🎉 Yes, 12 ~ that’s officially old for a sheep! We bought Fluffy twelve whole years ago as a cayed (orphan) lamb from @snowbirdchristmastreefarm and she’s had trouble written all over her from day one 😂 She’s the most stubborn, cantankerous, single-minded, often grumpy sheep you can find. She’s had five sets of twin ewe lambs here on the farm over the years and has more or less refused to look after any of them! She is utterly obsessed by food and when she wants more grass she just moves herself (and her friends Pebbles, Crunchie, Gabby & Loopy) into a new field. Or she walks round in circles baa-ing her head off at top volume until we move her. But somehow we love her to bits and she’s become part of the fabric of the farm. A beautifully sunny day to take part in the annual @gamewildlifeconservationtrust Big Farmland Bird Count. Farmers can take part from 2nd-18th February each year to record bird species & numbers and measure the impact of biodiversity measures on farms. Across 30 minutes in our Spinney Field tree plantation and adjoining field of wild bird food mix I spotted the following: 7x blackbird 33x crow 4x chaffinch 1x woodpecker 1x kestrel 2x magpie 2x pheasant 1x red kite 41x starling 6x sparrow 11x pigeon 1x wren (Plus one noisy plane ~ is it a bird, is it a plane? It was a jolly noisy plane!) Don’t believe everything you see & read about declining bird numbers on farms. There’s SO much biodiversity on farms and our Christmas tree plantations are always full of birdlife, and small mammals that feed the birds of prey too of course. And so the work in the trees starts again for this year! The circle of tree growing 🌲 We’re trying out our NEW mower attachment on our Jutek Christmas tree tractor ~ and so far it’s doing a good job on those pesky weeds, making fairly quick work on this 18,000 tree plantation. It’s fair to say it was a bit cold for Chris on it today, but it blew the cobwebs away for a few hours that’s for sure! Thanks to the @anglianwater Farming Innovation Grant for contributing towards this new mower attachment, which we imported from Denmark. At the grand old ages of 18 & 16 George & Ruby have never known a Christmas without Christmas tree season here on the farm. Every tree tells a story 💞 Each season we are delighted to donate a tree to the village of Milton Malsor near Northampton. The reason for this? Chris’ great-uncle Frank Turner lived with his family here at the start of the 20th century, they were the village blacksmiths. At the tender age of 18 Frank left the village to go to War, and sadly was killed in the Battle of Arras on 23rd August 1918. Some years ago we took a road trip to northern France and amazingly managed to find Frank’s grave, and plant a little heather on it for all the family. Frank’s name is listed, along with many others who fell, on the War Memorial in Milton Malsor and one of our trees stands next to it on the green every festive season. A huge thank you to @annabelmacadam and her husband Glenn and a committee of volunteers who get the tree, put it up and decorate it so beautifully for various village celebrations in December. It’s all coming together! One of our favourite afternoons of the year is when our village First School comes to visit 😊 Today we took the children on a walk around all the plantations ~ thankfully the rain passed and the sun even came out! We showed them the different varieties of trees and talked about the wide range of jobs we do all year to get them ready. They looked at some cones…worked out the age of a tree by counting the rings on a stump…looked at the growth of a tree they planted during last year’s visit…and really enjoyed seeing our Jutek Christmas tree tractor. We also showed them the sunflowers and environmental crops we grow alongside the trees to encourage birds & insects. There were some brilliant questions from such a young age range of 4-7 years, such as “where does the seed come from?” and “how does rain affect the farm?” And of course they were able to choose their very own tree to enjoy in school this festive season.
