Tree care & tips

Tips to keep your tree fresh all through the Christmas period.

As your tree is cut fresh from the field, it can be taken straight indoors & placed in a water-holding stand.

If you decide to keep the tree outdoors for a few days, just put it in a bucket of water, sheltered from the wind and sun. When you are ready to bring it indoors, cut 1cm off the base of the trunk. This ensures the tree stem is open and can take up water. Immediately put the tree in the stand and fill it with fresh water.

Remember, trees are very thirsty! They can drink between 0.5 and 2 litres of water every day. Always use a water holding stand with a capacity of one to two litres. Check the stand daily and fill with fresh water as needed.

Don't forget to dispose of your tree thoughtfully. Find out about local recycling schemes. Most local authorities operate a chipping scheme. Look them up and call for more information or look out for details in your local press.

Tree Varieties

The Norway Spruce is the traditional Christmas tree which can be found in many homes during the festive season.

Norway Spruce can be found naturally in Northern and Central Europe. The tree features pointed mid-green colour needles with long cylindrical brown cones which hang down. Many people enjoy its scent once its indoors during December.

Nordmann Firs originate from the Caucasus mountains in Georgia, southern Russia and have seen a steady rise in popularity over recent years. They are a non needle-drop variety with a darker green coloured foliage and slightly more rounded needles.
